AT&T Opens Connected Learning Center at Albany Police Athletic League
Key insights
AT&T and the Albany Police Athletic League (PAL) launched the city’s first AT&T Connected Learning Center to provide internet access and high-quality educational tools to local students. The center was made possible by a $47,000 community investment from AT&T, which will support the technology and digital literacy programming.
The launch was attended by local public safety officials, including Sgt. Lenny Ricchiuti (RET) – Executive Director, Albany PAL; Chief Brendan Cox, Albany Police Department; Albany District Attorney Lee Kindlon; Michael McLaughlin, Deputy County Executive for Albany County, and others.
This Connected Learning Center is the 14th AT&T has opened in the state of New York over the past two years. It offers free access to digital resources, including internet, high-powered computers, smart TV, and gaming software that the kids requested to help learn how to create/code. Educational resources such as The AchieverySM, a free digital learning platform by AT&T, are also offered. The CLC also featured a brand-new mural painted by a local artist.
And Albany PAL is also taking this show on the road. PAL is putting together a “mobile” unit to bring technology out to events and summer programs, as well as building out mini-CLC locations at some of their playground and clubhouse facilities to incorporate tech into their summer programming. This creative and effective use of the collaboration will spread the benefits to many more kids around Albany.
“This improvement project made possible with a grant from AT&T, is a great example of what can happen when the business community, the Police Athletic League (PAL), and the Albany Police Department come together with a shared purpose. Collaborations like this allow us to grow meaningful opportunities for our youth while also strengthening connections with our officers,” said Chief Cox.
The Albany Police Athletic League is a youth development organization which brings kids, cops and community together in non-law enforcement settings. PAL accomplishes its goals by presenting various educational, recreational, mentoring and social opportunities to Albany’s youth. Each year, PAL engages approximately 2000 youth with activities such as after-school clubs, mentoring, Police Explorers, lacrosse, track events, and much more.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with Albany PAL and Albany PD, and for their dedicated efforts to support Albany families. This CLC will give local families access to internet connectivity, educational and mentoring resources to help them succeed in digital school and job environments. This effort directly reflects our commitment to get more New Yorkers connected and make an impact in the communities we serve.
This CLC is part of AT&T’s nationwide initiative to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption. AT&T is committing $5 billion to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
