AT&T volunteer hands out laptops to children

Families arrived at the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center in North Minneapolis expecting backpacks filled with school supplies — a wonderful way to help students start the year prepared.

But then came the surprise: thanks to AT&T and Human-I-T, each family also received a free MacBook.

Excitement filled the room as students and families attending Phyllis Wheatley’s Back-to-School community event realized what they would be taking home.

Bryan Tyner, the former Minneapolis Fire Chief who became Phyllis Wheatley’s CEO earlier this year, called the surprise from AT&T an incredible gift for the families the center serves.

“Nobody knew they were going to be receiving laptops,” said Tyner. “They signed up just to receive a backpack of school supplies. So when AT&T announced they were receiving Apple MacBooks, the joy and surprise on the kids’ faces — and on their parents’ faces — was simply unforgettable.”

A laptop can open the door to homework help, job applications, telehealth and staying connected. But families also need the skills to use technology safely and confidently.

That is why I am proud AT&T is also providing $50,000 to the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center to support digital literacy programs. Through classes and workshops, families will learn about computer basics, online safety, internet navigation, and more.

Phyllis Wheatley’s deep roots in North Minneapolis make this work especially meaningful. Its team supports children, young people and families through education, youth development, family strengthening, financial empowerment, and restorative services.

And the need to bridge the digital divide goes far beyond one event. Millions of people across the country still lack reliable internet access or connected devices, making it harder to keep up in school, apply for jobs, and access essential services.

At AT&T, we are working to help close that gap through access, affordability and adoption, including our commitment to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.

To the students heading back to school this fall: we are cheering you on. And to the parents, caregivers, educators and community partners who show up for students every day: thank you for helping open doors to brighter, more connected futures.
