Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, Road Commission Transform First Responder Communications with FirstNet

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County (RCKC) are connecting their first responders and public safety professionals to FirstNet®, Built with AT&T – the only nationwide, high-speed broadband communications platform dedicated to and purpose-built for America’s first responders and the extended public safety community.

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and the RCKC both utilize FirstNet for their communications to help provide better services and public safety. Sheriff deputies in Kalamazoo County are using FirstNet on their department-issued smartphones and tablets, and in their vehicles and frontline apparatuses. The RCKC team is using FirstNet on smartphones and with tablets.

“With the FirstNet dedicated network core, our first responders can stay connected when and where they need it most across the county,” said Kalamazoo County Sheriff Richard C. Fuller III. “Whether we are responding to emergencies or working through winter storms, FirstNet allows us to have the priority and preemption, that helps keep our deputies and communities safer.”

During a recent visit to the RCKC’s new complex in Kalamazoo, Congressman Bill Huizenga joined Sheriff Fuller, the RCKC team, AT&T, and FirstNet for a tour of the FirstNet Connected vehicle and the miniCRD – rapid deployables outfitted with the latest technology to support first responders and the public safety community.

The FirstNet Connected vehicle provides enhanced safety for the responder through interoperable communications, vehicle telematics, and location/situational awareness. The miniCRD is a portable deployable kit that links to FirstNet via satellite without relying on commercial power availability and can cover up to one-half mile.

“FirstNet is a critical tool that will enhance the ability of our first responders and public safety to communicate during emergencies and in times of crisis,” said Congressman Bill Huizenga. “It was great to see first-hand how Kalamazoo County will utilize this technology to better serve the community and save lives.”

“We’re honored that the Sheriff’s Office and the RCKC have chosen FirstNet to improve their communications technology and connectivity,” said David Lewis, State President, AT&T Michigan. “As public safety’s partner, we believe it is our mission to give public safety the cutting-edge tools they need to keep our communities safe. FirstNet will help first responders in Kalamazoo County and across the nation perform at the highest levels to keep themselves and those they serve out of harm’s way.”

The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office and the RCKC joined FirstNet to provide their first responders and the extended public safety community with an entire public safety ecosystem of mission-ready tools and capabilities.
