Helping Illinois Families Guide Students for Online Safety

In a quiet suburban neighborhood 20 miles from Chicago’s O’Hare International airport, parents and caregivers with the Aldrin Elementary PTA in Schaumburg, Illinois, gathered in the school’s gymnasium to learn how to ensure their children’s online safety.

“We were able to invite our families to learn about screen readiness, about digital safety, and how to create healthy digital habits at home,” said Marisol Guevara, President, Aldrin Elementary PTA.

The evening was a collaboration among AT&T, National PTA and Aldrin Elementary PTA, and billed as an PTA Connected: Ready, Tech, Go! educational program

“The skill that I learned through this workshop specifically that I just haven’t heard before, was engaging with your kids with the same activity to research and find out, right, what are they interested in and how can we navigate it together,” said one parent.

To cap off the event, 200 qualifying households received a free, refurbished laptop from Compudopt to help keep their families connected, thanks to a contribution from AT&T.

“We had 200 families attending this event. All of them received a computer thanks to AT&T, and we are so honored to support our school community,” Guevara said.

“This was a terrific event with local families. Helping parents and caregivers understand how to guide their kids safely through the online world is so important for raising smart and responsible digital citizens,” said Eileen Mitchell, President, AT&T Midwest States.

“At Compudopt, we believe access to technology is fundamental to a bright future. We’re proud to support AT&T initiatives that empower individuals through education, connectivity, and opportunity—because when communities are equipped with the tools they need, the possibilities are endless,” said Megan Steckly, CEO of Compudopt.

Kicking off the event, parents and caregivers tackled the question “When is the right time to give my child a phone?” Families also completed the PhoneReady Quiz, from AT&T ScreenReady® created in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Children attending the event toured AT&T’s Mobile Connectivity Center TM (MCC), a mobile trailer with 48 feet of interior space deployed by the company for disaster relief and digital literacy opportunities across the country. Equipped with workstations, laptops, Wi-Fi, and more, the MCC provided a space for the children to engage with lessons from The AchieverySM, AT&T’s free digital learning platform for K-12 students.

Thanks to a contribution from AT&T, this program was one of five marquee events among 350 Ready, Tech, Go! events being hosted by local PTAs across the country in 2025. Since 2022, AT&T and National PTA have facilitated over 230 workshops across the nation, serving over 17,000 people.

“PTAs work hard every day to meet the critical needs of students, families, schools and communities and make every child’s potential a reality,” said Yvonne Johnson, President of National PTA. “We are grateful to AT&T for supporting the efforts of PTAs to host programs for students and families in the areas of screen readiness and digital literacy.”

This effort is part of AT&T’s initiative to help address the digital divide through internet accessibility, affordability and safe adoption and National PTA’s PTA Connected initiative to help families navigate the digital world. Since 2021, AT&T has committed $5 billion dollars to help 25 million people get and stay connected to high-speed internet by 2030.
