Proactively enhancing first responder communication networks is vital to keeping public safety connected when it matters most. And we’re proud to announce new wireless infrastructure upgrades in Marion County, aimed at helping South Carolina’s first responders and their mission of protecting communities across the state.
On August 13, I had the opportunity to come together with AT&T and the FirstNet Authority to showcase how FirstNet® Built with AT&T is delivering mission-critical connectivity to our first responders.
We were also joined by U.S. Representative Russell Fry (SC-07), State Representative Lucas Atkinson, members of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, and other local first responders, public safety officials, and leaders. Together, we celebrated the completion of our 5G wireless infrastructure upgrades on cell sites throughout Marion County.
Strengthening First Responder Communications
These network enhancements feature Band 14 spectrum, nationwide, high-quality spectrum set aside specifically for FirstNet. Whether a hurricane, tornado, fire, or flood occurs, this dedicated “VIP lane” for first responders provides dedicated connectivity to rapidly respond during any kind of emergency.
“Our first responders count on reliable communication to do their jobs and keep our communities safe, and FirstNet is helping them do just that,” said Rep. Russell Fry. “With recent wireless upgrades in Marion County, public safety professionals have enhanced, dedicated connectivity they can count on.”
Investing in Public Safety and Our Communities
At AT&T, we understand that investing in our first responders means investing in our communities. That’s why we work hand in hand with public safety professionals to make sure that they have all the necessary tools to provide their life-saving services.
“FirstNet was designed with public safety at its core, and the FirstNet Authority works every day to ensure that first responders have the connectivity they need. These recent wireless communications upgrades in Marion County are a clear example of that mission in action,” said Dr. Damon Darsey, Board Member, FirstNet Authority. “Together with AT&T, we’re ensuring first responders have connectivity and capabilities needed to protect and serve their communities.”
Providing Rapid Response
During the event, the FirstNet Authority provided demonstrations of dedicated FirstNet deployable network assets, including a Satellite Cell on Light Truck (SatCOLT) and a Compact Rapid Deployable (CRD). These portable cell sites are part of a nationwide fleet of over 180 deployable assets available exclusively to FirstNet subscribers during emergencies.
“FirstNet is a lifeline for public safety professionals and first responders. AT&T’s investment in modern public safety communications helps our deputies respond to emergencies, coordinate across agencies and protect our communities,” said Sheriff J. Brian Wallace, Marion County Sheriff’s Office. “This investment strengthens our emergency response capabilities and supports those who serve on the front lines every day.”
Our Commitment Remains Across South Carolina
As a South Carolinian, I was proud to stand alongside first responders to reaffirm our commitment to working with and supporting the public safety community.
“At AT&T, we’re committed to investing in the communications infrastructure that South Carolina’s communities depend on,” said Terrance Ford, Vice President of External Affairs, AT&T South Carolina. “Through FirstNet, we’re delivering reliable, dedicated connectivity that gives public safety the innovative communications tools they need to respond quickly and effectively.”
FirstNet now serves more than 370 localities across South Carolina, with nearly 1,400 wireless sites equipped with Band 14 spectrum throughout the state. This investment reflects our ongoing commitment to public safety and the communities we serve.
As FirstNet continues to expand and evolve to meet the needs of our first responders, we must ensure they have the technology and reliable connectivity required to protect our communities. Our commitment to connect first responders and public safety organizations with unparalleled connectivity remains, and we are proud to continue our work across South Carolina.
