Getting people connected to high-speed internet is always a cause for celebration. And that is exactly what we did as we announced that AT&T Fiber® service is coming to more than 20,000 new customer locations across San Antonio.
At Lockwood-Dignowity Park, we held a “Block Party” with City of San Antonio officials and residents as we passed a significant milestone in our shared efforts to close the digital divide. The community came together, shared a meal from a local food truck, and talked about the incoming internet service that is going to open opportunities for households and businesses in the community.
To add to the festivities, 100 refurbished laptops provided by AT&T and Human-I-T were distributed to students in the community. These students, identified by SA Digital Connects, are now heading into the summer break with something extra to smile about. And once the school year gets back underway, they will have these devices to enhance their learning – both in the classroom and outside of it.
“We appreciate AT&T’s partnership and their hard work in building new fiber connections to more than 20,000 customer locations in San Antonio and their support of local students. Their efforts equal access, which equals equity and opportunity for students, families and business owners and is critical to the future of our city,” said Ron Nirenberg, San Antonio Mayor.
The City of San Antonio chose AT&T as its partner to connect more than 20,000 customer locations to high-speed internet. Since then, we’ve been building out our fiber network as part of that project. This project will expand access to AT&T Fiber for students and families and connect them to the wealth of digital opportunities that come with access to reliable, high-speed internet.
Texas state Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins said, “The launch of lightning-fast, ultra-secure fiber brings new and exciting opportunities for this community. This investment in our network, and today’s laptop distribution, are both critical to the success of San Antonio families and businesses.”
Texas state Sen. José Menéndez added, “The partnership between the City of San Antonio and AT&T is a great example of how we can work together to bridge the digital divide in our city and across Texas. With new fiber connections available now and more to come, families will have improved access to online information and resources to support their educational, economic, and other goals.”
The celebration was made possible thanks to hand-in-hand efforts between committed organizations with a shared goal to close the digital divide – showing what we can accomplish when we work together.
Our project here in San Antonio is one of many active rollouts nationwide via public-private projects to expand internet access, adoption and affordability. Through our $5 billion dollar commitment to bridge the digital divide and our investments into our networks, we are committed to helping build more connected communities across San Antonio, the Lone Star state, and the country.
Beyond this project, AT&T has invested more than $12.6 billion in our Texas network infrastructure from 2019-2023 to connect more people to greater possibility, including nearly $1.1 billion in the San Antonio-New Braunfels area.
We look forward to celebrating again when the project is fully complete.
