Any time spent making connections and investing in local communities is time well spent – especially when you’re spending that time in a state like Alabama where the southern hospitality is felt from miles away.
In fact, that southern hospitality was felt all month as we spent August celebrating Connectivity Month in Alabama, distributing laptops, and announcing wireless network upgrades and fiber network expansions throughout the state.
A whole month of connectivity gave us ample time to connect students and families to digital resources. We traveled to 7 cities to distribute a whopping 450 refurbished laptops to Alabama students for the new school year.
The computers, in collaboration with Human I-T, were given to Drake State Community and Technical College in Huntsville; Salute Selma in Camden, Haynesville and Selma; Sowing Seeds of Hope in Marion; United Way of Southwest Alabama in Mobile; and the Walker Area Community Foundation in Jasper to support local students.
“Investing in the expansion of broadband networks and digital literacy is investing in the future of our communities,” said State Senator Robert Stewart. “It’s essential for driving innovation, creating jobs, and ensuring equal access to digital resources for all.”
We also spent this time announcing wireless network upgrades and boosted speeds across Alabama. AT&T has expanded its 5G network to 24 counties across the state – giving residents, businesses and state visitors an exciting boost to their wireless connectivity. This year, we also launched 44 new cell towers to enhance coverage and capacity in Alabama.
During the month, we also announced the expansion of our AT&T Fiber® network in the state, with new availability to 31,000 customer locations in parts of Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. AT&T Fiber now reaches more than 660,000 customer locations across Alabama.
Although investment in the state occurs year-round, we’re always looking for reasons to celebrate connectivity in the Yellowhammer State. As we close out Connectivity Month – part of our $5 billion pledge since 2021 to help bridge the digital divide – we reflect on the immense work accomplished and all the lives touched during this time. We are so excited to continue investing in the people and state of Alabama.
