Boys & Girls Clubs are a pillar in communities across the state. They provide safe spaces, mentorship, and opportunities that help shape the next generation of leaders. Their work is vital to ensuring youth are prepared for the challenges of an ever-changing world. Today, those challenges include the digital divide.
As part of this mission, AT&T teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club in both Portland and Corvallis to provide students with laptops and backpacks full of school supplies. These resources give students the tools they need to successfully participate in the classroom through digital learning.
In Portland, AT&T and Human-I-T distributed 150 laptops and backpacks at the Boys & Girls Club Blazers Club location. The distribution was part of a lively back-to-school event where families also received additional school supplies, hygiene products and shoes to ensure students were fully prepared for the year ahead.
“Access to technology is access to opportunity,” said Terry Johnson, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metro Area. “With these laptops, our youth can explore their potential, build new skills and shape their own futures.”
Adding to the excitement, local elected officials joined the celebration to help hand out devices and connect with families. Among them were Senator Lisa Reynolds, Senator Janeen Sollman, Representative Sue Rieke Smith and Representative Shannon Jones Isadore, who shared their support for efforts to expand digital access across Oregon.
AT&T’s commitment continued at the Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis with the distribution of 50 laptops and backpacks to local students. By giving them access to essential technology, the initiative ensures they have the tools needed to thrive in an increasingly digital learning environment.
“Providing teens with their own laptops will open doors to their educational and career aspirations,” said Helen Higgins, CEO, Boys & Girls Club of Corvallis. “This donation is a great example of impact in action from AT&T, and we are deeply appreciative.”
AT&T’s work to bridge the digital divide in Oregon reflects a broader national commitment to connect communities and expand access. Across the country, AT&T is providing 30,000 backpacks and laptops to students in qualifying families. This effort is part of AT&T’s $5 billion investment aimed at helping 25 million people gain and maintain access to high-speed internet by 2030.
“At AT&T, we’re committed to expanding access to connectivity, and collaborations with groups like the Boys & Girls Club are key to that mission across Oregon,” said Lauren Paolini, External Affairs Manager, AT&T Oregon. “Closing the digital divide means meeting people where they are, and we’re proud to support efforts that bring vital technology to those who need it most.”
