What is the future of Connecticut business with 5G?

What can 5G do for business in Connecticut? A lot. First and foremost, analysis from industry group CTIA claims that 5G will spark more than 40,000 new jobs in Connecticut over the next decade.i  But 5G will also change how Connecticut works.

This week, I wrote an op-ed for the Hartford Business Journal, saying: 5G creates implications and benefits for a near-limitless array of industries and community institutions, from business to education, health care, public safety and more.

Business Impact

Here are a few real-world examples of what 5G connectivity could ultimately enable for business:

  • Hospitals could respond faster to changes in patients’ vital signs with edge computing inside and outside the hospital.
  • Manufacturing floors could be made safer with sensors that monitor different aspects of the working environment.
  • 5G will change the way we look at remote working. See how HERE.
  • Electronics manufacturers that operate fast-moving machinery could identify and fix mechanical failures in record time.
  • Financial services firms could transform the ATM into a full-service branch powered by videoconferencing over a 5G fixed wireless connection.

Environmental Impact

5G’s economic benefits can also help us address other national challenges, like innovative ways to help the environment. Check out this video about the Connected Potato we created with Soiltech. Powered by IoT broadband, it helps farmers reduce their water consumption by about 500 MILLION gallons a year on a 10,000-acre potato farm. It can also help increase crop production and reduce emissions, while adding hundreds of thousands of dollars to farmers’ bottom lines.

WIND The capacity of 5G networks will ultimately allow for proactive and consistent maintenance needed for more consistent performance at wind-based utility companies — while also increasing personnel safety by cutting down on the need for manual inspections.

WATER Farmers will be able to use smart-irrigation connected technology that lets growers monitor and analyze soil moisture, as well as plan and control irrigation with pinpoint accuracy to increase yield and conserve resources. Read more.

ENERGY 5G connections will enable municipalities to plan energy infrastructure spending more efficiently and reduce downtime. Smart grid technology, for example, will enable precise, real-time monitoring. This can help speed up repairs and reduce downtime following an outage or natural disaster.

There are near limitless ways 5G technology can positively impact the business community, enabling the use of next generation technology to support innovation, economic development, and environmental sustainability.
