AT&T Completes Broadband Upgrades at New Mexico State Capitol

What’s the news?

AT&T recently completed a year-long upgrade of its wireless voice and broadband network inside the New Mexico State Capitol building ahead of the Redistricting Special Session and 2022 Regular Legislative Session. The upgrades give AT&T customers who visit and work in the Roundhouse faster, more reliable wireless service. First responders and those that support them can subscribe to FirstNet®, Built with AT&T, the only nationwide, high-speed broadband communications platform purpose-built for first responders and the extended public safety community.

Why is this important?

The new indoor Distributed Antenna System (DAS) is a system of strategically placed antennas that distribute and actively manage wireless network coverage throughout the Capitol Building’s four floors and its annex. This 4G LTE capacity boost will improve connectivity even during periods of heavy wireless traffic.

The upgrades also include the addition of Band 14 spectrum. Band 14 is licensed to the FirstNet Authority for the specific purpose of creating a nationwide, public-safety wireless broadband network. As the private partner behind FirstNet, AT&T has exclusive rights to this spectrum to provide first responders with the coverage and capacity they need across the country. Capitol visitors and employees will be able to take advantage of Band 14 when it’s not in use by FirstNet subscribers

What people are saying:

“Important work, including decisions that impact the future of New Mexico, are made every day at the Roundhouse. It’s critical that those working in the building or visiting it have effective connectivity.”

“Important work, including decisions that impact the future of New Mexico, are made every day at the Roundhouse. It’s critical that those working in the building or visiting it have effective connectivity.” Bob Digneo, External Affairs Director of AT&T New Mexico said. “These upgrades will give our customers a big boost in reliability, speed and capacity.”

The capital upgrades are among the latest improvements to AT&T’s network in New Mexico.

AT&T invested nearly $150 million in our wireless networks in the state from 2018-2020. These investments boost reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for residents and their businesses across the state.
