AT&T – through its participation in the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Connect America Fund (CAF II) – has extended high-speed Internet service to more than 53,000 homes and businesses in rural parts of 43 counties in the state.
In the first four months of 2020, we have continued to expand access to new Fixed-Wireless Internet (FWI) services at more than 20 additional cellular tower sites. This effort makes high-speed Internet available to even more rural customers across the State, as we work to meet our goal of delivering access to more than 13,000 additional locations by the end of this year.
Fixed-Wireless Internet delivers an internet connection with typical download speeds of 25Mbps.1 The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on a customer’s home or business, creating an efficient way to deliver last-mile high-speed internet to customers living in underserved rural areas.
“I appreciate AT&T’s continued investment in our State, and the work being done to provide more access and faster internet service, especially in rural areas of Alabama,” said State Representative Randall Shedd. “These investments are critical to the success of our communities at any time, but especially with the shifting needs of residents and businesses resulting from COVID-19.”
“AT&T’s Fixed Wireless Internet is offering my family more options in our everyday lives, at an affordable price,” said Shannon Ary, an AT&T Fixed Wireless customer. “My husband and I can now work from home, which is life-changing, and our children have increased access to educational tools at home, not to mention videos and gaming with friends. We are excited to have access to this innovative technology and pleased AT&T continues to enhance high-speed connectivity in Arkadelphia and other rural communities across Alabama.”

“Alabama’s leaders have worked hard to create an environment that welcomes innovation and investment.”
Wayne Hutchens, President – AT&T Alabama
“Alabama’s leaders have worked hard to create an environment that welcomes innovation and investment,” said Wayne Hutchens, President of AT&T Alabama. “In that environment, we are keeping residents and businesses across Alabama connected. And, while we recognize that there is more work to be done, the continued deployment of this innovative service and the ongoing enhancement of our statewide network reflects our commitment to this State.”
