You may remember that question. It started in the 60s and was asked right before the nightly 10pm news. Many parents are now very aware of the need to know where their children are and would hope to answer without hesitation. Give your children independence, but yourself peace of mind, with AT&T FamilyMap.

Now you can track your child’s location from your phone or PC at any time. AT&T FamilyMap uses several different techniques to locate a phone. The most accurate readings (within a few yards) are returned by A-GPS phones when “seen” by GPS satellites. If the device is not in the satellite’s clear line of site, the system automatically uses the wireless network cell sites that have accuracy within a few hundred yards.

You can even set a schedule for specific days and times to automatically locate a family member’s phone. For example, you can set a Schedule Check for 4:00 pm every weekday to make sure your child gets home from school when you expect them. Once you create this Schedule Check, AT&T FamilyMap will locate your family member’s phone and send you the location via email or text message.

Are you sick of getting lost when traveling to unfamiliar places? You could of course turn to maps to help find your way, but carrying them along for the ride is cumbersome not to mention that you would need more than just a few if you are going a long way. Fortunately, there is a new way to get to where you are going with ease. GPS navigation systems can be very helpful and provide a safer and more efficient way to find places.

The main purpose of the GPS system is to make sure you get from A to point B. In addition to helping you select the right route, it can also calculate how long it takes to travel from one place to the next. One of the best things about having this capability on your phone is that it’s available wherever you are and whenever you need it.

As convenient as GPS devices are, we may not stop to think about the amazing technology that makes them possible. It all begins in space, thousands of miles above the earth’s atmosphere.

There are more than 24 GPS satellites in what is known as medium earth orbit, at a typical distance of about 12,600 miles above the earth. The system was developed by the US Department of Defense and is managed by the US Air Force. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the system available for civilian use.

When powered up, your GPS phone is in constant communication with these satellites. The GPS satellites transmit signal information at all times, in any weather and to any place on earth. From the signal received, it calculates your location, altitude, speed and direction of travel and displays the information on your phone’s screen. Recently, cell towers have been added to the system to assist in pinpointing locations.

Locaton based (including social networking) services are available to you through AT&T Navigator. It provides spoken turn-by-turn GPS driving directions with automatic reroute, full color maps, and real-time traffic alerts on your phone.
